Heating and Cooling in Batavia, NY

Batavia is a 55-minute drive away, so every visit is planned, and we say so before you book.

Heating and cooling in Batavia is a 55-minute drive from our Orchard Park base, so every job there is a scheduled visit, never a quick stop. Batavia is outside the area listed on our Google profile. That means we cannot offer the fast turnaround a Batavia contractor can, and we would rather say that up front.

The city is the Genesee County seat, and its older homes are the ones worth a booked visit: a system you want judged honestly, a replacement you want planned, or a tune-up before the cold. If the heat is out tonight, call a closer company first.

Tonawanda Creek, the Holland Land Office and the age of Batavia’s houses

Joseph Ellicott of the Holland Land Company founded the settlement at the Big Bend of Tonawanda Creek in the early 1800s, and the stone Holland Land Office on West Main Street, built in 1815, is now a museum and National Historic Landmark. NY 5 crosses NY 33, 63 and 98 inside the city, and the Thruway runs just north of it.

Point2Homes and NeighborhoodScout each put close to 48 percent of Batavia’s homes at 1939 or earlier. Wikipedia counts 7,450 housing units in 2020, 7.9 percent vacant. Houses that old produce the borderline decisions, such as a furnace that still runs but costs more each winter. We give you the numbers on both sides and let you choose.

Wikipedia’s 1991 to 2020 normals for Batavia show a January mean daily low of 15.8°F, about 73.9 inches of snow a year with 23.0 inches in January, and monthly record lows of minus 28°F in February and December. That is a hard design temperature for a heat-loss calculation, and it is why we check that a replacement furnace has the capacity for the coldest week and not just the average one.

The same page says Johnston Harvester began making farm machinery in 1868, Polish and Italian families arrived in the early 1900s, and Batavia became a city in 1915. Houses from those decades have a century of changes behind them. The 2020 census counted 6,863 households, about 40 percent of them one person, with a homeowner vacancy rate of 0.9 percent, so these are mostly lived-in houses where a failed furnace is a cold kitchen, not an empty building.

Services Batavia homes ask for most

How scheduling works between Orchard Park and Batavia

The drive is mostly Thruway, then into Genesee County. We book Batavia visits ahead and keep them to our weekday hours, Monday through Friday, 7:30 to 5. Call first with the equipment’s age and symptoms. We will tell you whether we can come and, just as important, whether a Batavia or Rochester-area company is a better fit for the job.

From 55 minutes away we are usually not the quickest answer to a furnace that has quit. For a planned job, a visit starts with a look at the equipment and ends with a clear quote before any work begins.

On a replacement visit we measure the rooms, look at the flue path and return air, and note which room runs coldest. Those notes feed the load calculation behind the quote.

Big Bend, NY 5 and the Town of Batavia: getting your bearings

Wikipedia notes an old mill dam at the Big Bend of Tonawanda Creek downtown, NY 5 running east-west through the city past NY 33, 63 and 98, the Thruway immediately north of the city and Genesee County Airport also to the north. It also says the Oatka Milk plant still processes milk from area dairy farms. These are the places that tell you where a call is coming from, and how far the drive runs once we leave the Thruway.

The Town of Batavia is a separate government around the city, with its own building department and fee schedule. A permit question for a house inside the city goes to the City of Batavia, which runs its own Bureau of Inspection. The City’s business directory lists National Grid for electric customer service, and National Fuel’s tariff lists the city for gas, so check your bills before calling either about a problem.

Proof you can check for yourself

There are no Batavia projects on this site yet. Our 4.9 Google rating from 57 reviews, as of October 2026, is something you can read in full on the reviews page. National Fuel’s New York tariff lists the City of Batavia in its gas territory, so that is the number to call for a gas smell.

Erie County Consumer Protection notes that New York has no statewide HVAC license and leaves it to local rules. Genesee County is outside that page’s scope, so ask Batavia city hall about permits for a furnace swap.

Batavia heating and cooling questions

Will you drive to Batavia for a replacement quote?

Yes, by appointment. Batavia is about 55 minutes from Orchard Park, so we book it for a weekday and do not do drive-by visits. Call (321) 666-8870 with the furnace’s age and symptoms. We will tell you if the timing works, and if a Batavia contractor is the more sensible choice, we will say that too.

Who issues permits for a furnace swap in the City of Batavia?

Start with the City of Batavia, which has its own Bureau of Inspection, a published fee schedule and a building permit application. The Town of Batavia is a separate government with its own building department, so an address inside the city does not go there. Ask the city whether a like-for-like furnace needs a permit, and who files it.

My Batavia furnace is old but still running. Should I replace it?

Not automatically. A furnace that runs but short cycles, needs repeat repairs, or shows a rusted heat exchanger deserves a hard look. We inspect it, explain what we find, and set repair and replacement side by side with a clear quote before work starts. A fall tune-up is the cheapest way to learn where it stands.
