Emergency AC repair in Buffalo starts with whether anyone is at risk: call 911 for signs of heat illness, and then call us at (321) 666-8870. If the air conditioner has stopped and everyone is safe, we want to hear what it is doing.

Our office hours are Monday through Friday, 7:30 AM to 5:00 PM, and we are closed on weekends. Call outside those hours and leave a message. We do not promise an arrival time, and we tell you honestly when we can get there.

What is included with emergency ac repair

  • Phone triage on whether the problem is safe to leave until we arrive
  • Checks of thermostat, breaker, disconnect and condensate safety switch
  • Capacitor, contactor and fan motor testing at the condenser
  • Evaporator coil, drain and airflow inspection
  • Refrigerant readings explained in plain terms
  • A clear quote before repair work starts

What counts as an AC emergency?

Most AC failures are uncomfortable rather than dangerous. Buffalo averages only about 2.1 days a year above 90°F, according to the Great Lakes Integrated Sciences and Assessments program at the University of Michigan. A few hot, humid days still carry real risk for some people.

  • An infant, an older adult or someone with a heart or breathing condition is in the home.
  • Medical equipment or medication that needs a cool room is involved.
  • Water is leaking from the unit toward light fixtures or electrical panels.
  • You smell burning, see smoke or hear loud buzzing from the unit. Shut it off at the breaker, and call 911 if there is smoke.

The CDC lists a body temperature of 103°F or higher among the signs of heat stroke and says to call 911 right away. Move the person somewhere cooler while you wait for help.

What should you do right now if the AC stops?

  1. Check the thermostat. Set it to cool and a few degrees below the room temperature. Replace the batteries if the screen is blank.
  2. Check the breaker and disconnect. Reset a tripped breaker once. If it trips again, leave it off and tell us.
  3. Look at the filter and coil. A packed filter is easy to replace. If you see ice on the indoor coil or the copper line, switch cooling off and run the fan alone so it can thaw.
  4. Stop any leak. Water at the furnace or ceiling means shutting the system off and moving things out from under it.
  5. Cool the room another way. Close blinds, run fans, stay on the lowest floor, or go somewhere cooler for the hottest hours.

Can you come on a weekend or in the evening?

We are open Monday through Friday, 7:30 to 5. Call (321) 666-8870 outside those hours and leave a message with your address, what the AC is doing and who is in the house. We return calls and say honestly when we can get there. If we cannot reach you in time, we tell you.

These are customers’ experiences, not promises. They show what has happened for some people during hot spells.

What happens when we arrive?

  1. Hear it again. We ask what you saw and heard when it stopped, since the first hour often holds the clue.
  2. Test the outdoor unit. Capacitor, contactor, fan motor and compressor, using a meter.
  3. Test the indoor side. Filter, blower, coil and drain. An iced coil may need hours to thaw before it can be read.
  4. Explain and quote. You see the failed part or the readings, hear the options and decide before we repair anything.

If a unit has to be left running on a temporary fix, or the part must be ordered, we tell you before we leave. Old units are a different conversation, and our AC replacement page explains how we weigh it.

What affects the cost of an urgent AC call, and what rules apply?

Ask us on the phone. We publish no emergency rate, and none is listed here. Tell us when you need us and what the unit is doing, and we explain how the visit would be priced before we head out.

You get a clear quote for the repair before it begins. Cost still depends on the failed part, the unit’s age and type, the refrigerant it uses and how hard it is to reach. Our AC repair page lists those factors, and a blog post covers what AC repair costs in Buffalo.

  • Parts: whether the part is on hand or must be ordered can turn one visit into two.
  • Where the fault sits: an outdoor capacitor is quicker to reach than a leak in an indoor coil.
  • Refrigerant: finding a leak is a separate step from recharging, and a technician certified under Section 608 must do both.
  • Unit age: a repair on a very old condenser may not be worth making, and we say so.
  • Timing: ask when you call whether the hour or day of the visit changes how it is priced.

Which permit, licensing and refrigerant rules apply?

Erie County Consumer Protection says New York has no statewide HVAC contractor license, so licensing is local. Cheektowaga, Tonawanda and Kenmore each set their own contractor rules. Inside Buffalo, Permit & Inspection Services handles HVAC permits, and Buffalo Code Chapter 175 allows double fees when work begins before a permit is issued. Replacing a condenser is a bigger job than a capacitor swap, so ask the municipality what your address requires. The EPA requires certification under Section 608 of the Clean Air Act to handle refrigerant.

How can you avoid an AC failure in hot weather?

  • Book AC maintenance in spring, ahead of the first humid week.
  • Replace the filter on schedule, and clear plants from around the condenser.
  • Test the AC in May instead of finding out on the first hot afternoon.
  • Know where your breaker and disconnect are.

Why do air conditioners fail on the first hot day?

A condenser sits idle through a long heating season. Seed fluff, leaves and packed debris collect in the fins, and a capacitor that has aged through the winter can fail on its first hard start. In mid-century houses where central air was added later, ducts sized for a furnace can restrict airflow. The Department of Energy’s Building America program notes that undersized ducts and restrictive filters lower airflow across the cooling coil, which is one reason coils ice up.

Emergency AC Repair questions

Is a broken AC an emergency in Buffalo?

Sometimes. It becomes urgent when an infant, an older adult or someone with a medical condition is in the home, or when water or burning smells are involved. Otherwise it is uncomfortable but manageable for a short time. Call 911 for signs of heat illness, then call us at (321) 666-8870.

Do you repair air conditioners on weekends?

Our office hours are Monday through Friday, 7:30 to 5, and we are closed Saturday and Sunday. Call anyway and leave a message. Customers have said they called on weekends and heard back, though we do not promise it. If we cannot get to you in time, we say so plainly.

What should I do if my AC freezes up?

Turn cooling off at the thermostat and set the fan to on, so air moving over the coil melts the ice. Do not chip ice off. Thawing takes hours, and a frozen coil usually means poor airflow or low refrigerant. Call us once the ice has begun to melt so we can find the cause.

Will you tell me the cost before you fix it?

Yes. We diagnose, show you the failed part or the readings and give you a clear quote before work starts. For the pricing of an urgent visit itself, ask when you call. We publish no emergency rate, and we would rather explain it on the phone than leave you guessing.

Can I keep the AC running while I wait for you?

Only if it is cooling normally. If you see ice, hear grinding or find water, shut it off, since running a damaged system can cost more to repair. Run the fan alone to thaw a frozen coil. If a breaker keeps tripping, leave it off and tell us when you call.
