Heating and cooling in Tonawanda usually starts with a house built in the 1950s and a set of ducts sized for heat, not for air conditioning. A new outdoor unit cannot fix airflow it was never given, which is why we measure the ducts before we recommend equipment.
We are about 30 minutes away in Orchard Park. This page covers the Town of Tonawanda, with its 72,636 residents at the 2020 Census per Wikipedia, and notes where the City of Tonawanda differs.
Why 1950s ducts hold back a new air conditioner
The Town of Tonawanda’s 2005 Comprehensive Plan, using 2000 Census data, found that 67.3 percent of the housing outside the Village of Kenmore was built between 1940 and 1959, and over 46 percent in the 1950s alone. The median year built was 1954. Houses on that schedule were designed for heat, with ducts sized for a furnace blower, and central air was an add-on years later, if at all.

That is the usual problem. Cooling needs more air through the ducts than heating does, and small trunk lines, long runs and sagging flex turn a good condenser into a noisy unit that cools the first floor and not the back bedroom. The New York energy code calls for equipment selected under ACCA Manual S from Manual J loads, which is the process we follow. We compare each room’s load with what the ducts can deliver, then decide between duct repair, a new trunk, or a ductless mini split for the stubborn room.
Newer numbers agree. The Census Bureau’s American Community Survey (2020-2024 estimates) still puts the town’s median year built at 1954, with about 41 percent of its housing from the 1950s and 15 percent from the 1940s. About 88 percent of homes heat with utility gas, and about 12 percent of housing units are two-family buildings.
The town sits between the Niagara River on the west and Ellicott Creek and Tonawanda Creek on the north, and the neighborhoods have names such as Brighton, Kenilworth, Sheridan Parkside, Parkview and Old Town. About 74.6 percent of homes outside the village were owner-occupied in 2000, so most of what we see is a family’s own equipment.

Licensing and local landmarks in Tonawanda
Erie County Consumer Protection says both the Town of Tonawanda and the City of Tonawanda require contractor licensing. The two are separate municipalities, so ask any contractor which license applies to your address, then confirm with the town or city office before work starts.
Wikipedia says the town was established in 1836 and, until 1903, included what is now the City of Tonawanda. It covers about 20.3 square miles, and most of it lies in the Kenmore-Tonawanda school district. A Tonawanda address can therefore sit in the town or in the city, so check which one is yours.

Tonawanda heating and cooling questions
Why does my new air conditioner not cool my Tonawanda house evenly?
Usually the ducts, not the unit. Many Tonawanda houses date from the 1950s, and their ducts were sized for a furnace, not for cooling. If the trunk is small or the runs are long, some rooms get too little air. We check duct size against the cooling load, then repair, enlarge or work around the weak spot.
Can I add a mini split instead of fixing the old ducts?
Often, yes. A ductless mini split cools a room or a small zone without using the old ducts, which suits a back bedroom, a finished attic or an addition. It does not heat or cool the whole house evenly, so we look at the layout first and tell you honestly whether ducts or a mini split is the better choice.
Does the Town of Tonawanda require contractor licensing?
Yes. Erie County Consumer Protection lists both the Town of Tonawanda and the City of Tonawanda as requiring contractor licensing. They are separate, so the right office depends on your address. Ask any contractor which license applies, and confirm with the municipality. New York has no statewide HVAC license.
When should I schedule an AC check in Tonawanda?
Before the first hot week, ideally in spring. A check finds low refrigerant, a dirty coil or a failing capacitor while we still have room on the schedule, and it is the cheapest time to learn the ducts are marginal. If you wait until July, expect a longer wait. Call us and we will tell you honestly when we can come.
