Heating and Cooling in Depew, NY

Depew began as a railroad village in the 1890s, and its older houses often added cooling long after they had heat.

Heating and cooling in Depew often means adding air conditioning to a house that was built without it. The village was incorporated in 1894 around the New York Central shops, and many of its blocks are old enough that cooling arrived later, if it arrived at all.

Transit Road divides the village between the Town of Lancaster on the east and Cheektowaga on the west. We are about 22 minutes away, and Depew is on our Google profile’s service list.

Railroad streets, mixed decades and the AC that came later

The village’s own history page says investors led by Chauncey Depew bought about 1,000 acres in 1893, and the Depew Improvement Company built streets, houses and the sewer system. By 1900 the New York Central shops employed about 1,000 men. Houses followed in waves, so one block can mix a century-old frame house with a postwar ranch.

Those houses were designed for heat, not for cooling. Ducts that carry warm air at a high velocity in January can be too small to move enough cool air in July, and a house with radiators has no ducts at all. Wikipedia’s 2020 count of 7,270 housing units in the village means a lot of different layouts, and each one has its own answer.

Airflow decides most cooling retrofits. The Florida Solar Energy Center reports that manufacturers typically rate residential split systems for 350 to 450 cubic feet per minute for each ton of cooling, and a duct system built for a heat-only furnace can fall well short of that. The signs are a coil that frosts, a bedroom that never cools and a blower that roars. Measuring the air before we quote saves arguing about it afterward.

Adding central air to a heat-only house starts with where the line set can run.

We lay out the real options. Central air can work when the existing ducts can carry the load, and a ductless mini split avoids ducts entirely. Customers have also had us service separate attic AC systems. Our comparison of mini splits and central air sets out the trade-offs.

Services Depew homes ask for most

What does a Depew service call look like?

We begin with what you have today: a furnace with no AC, a window-unit house, or a system that never cooled the upstairs. Then we inspect the ducts, check the electrical capacity and measure the rooms you want cooled. You hear the options and a clear quote before anything starts.

The drive from Orchard Park is about 22 minutes. Our office hours are weekdays, 7:30 AM to 5:00 PM.

Transit Road, two towns and the Depew building office

Wikipedia lists Gould Coupler Company, a maker of knuckle-type railroad couplers, among the village’s early industries, and says the railroad shops opened on April 1, 1893 with forty employees. The village covers about 5.1 square miles. Most of it is in the Depew Union Free School District, while edges fall in the Lancaster Central, Cheektowaga-Maryvale and Cheektowaga Central districts.

The Transit Road split matters for rules. Erie County says the Town of Cheektowaga requires the licensing of plumbers and HVAC contractors, and that the Village of Depew requires plumbers to be licensed. Ask the village which rules reach your address, and ask any contractor, us included, how they are handled. The village building department says to call 716-683-1400 to learn which items need a permit.

Checking Depew details before you hire

Our Google profile shows a 4.9 rating from 57 reviews as of October 2026, and Depew is among the areas it lists. We have no Depew project photos on this site yet. You can read the reviews in place of stock pictures.

Erie County Consumer Protection says the Village of Depew requires plumbers to be licensed, which matters if a job touches condensate drains or water piping. Confirm the rules with the village before work starts. The Amtrak Buffalo-Depew station sits just inside the western edge, a reminder of why the village exists.

Depew heating and cooling questions

Can I add central air to an older Depew house with no ductwork?

Sometimes, though a house with radiators and no ducts usually points toward a ductless mini split instead. Running new ducts means cutting through floors, walls or the attic, and the cost and mess rise fast. We walk the house, show you where ducts could go, and compare that with ductless before you commit.

Will my old furnace ducts handle air conditioning?

They might not. Ducts sized only for heating can be too small for cooling airflow, which shows up as weak flow upstairs and a coil that ices over. We measure the ducts and the airflow before recommending anything. Sometimes a few repairs and a balancing fix are enough, and sometimes the ducts need real changes.

Does HVAC work in the Village of Depew need a licensed plumber?

Erie County says the Village of Depew requires plumbers to be licensed. HVAC work can involve plumbing, such as a condensate drain, so ask the village what applies to your job. We tell you what we plan to do before work starts, so you can check with the village.
